KalPoint.com (KPDC): Please tell us about your family and your journey towards a successful life?

Miza Ishtiaq Baig (MIB): We are two brothers and four sisters and a very close knitted family. Our parents have always taught us to stay united whatever the situation is. Baig Group is a multinational conglomerate operating in Pakistan, U.A.E and Morocco in diversified industrial and commercial activities ranging from spinning, denim production, textile, engineering, photo-finishing, import-export, trading to electronic media. My elder brother Dr. Ikhtiar Baig is the Chairman of the group. He is a well-known personality, former Chairman of SITE Association and Honorary Consul General of Yemen in Karachi. I was the first industrialist to be appointed as Consul General of Pakistan to Morocco by the government of Pakistan in 1994. Presently, I am Chairman of Pak Morocco Business Consul and Senior Vice Chairman of Standing Committee on Export Trade and Industry of FPCCI.

KPDC: How do you see the current business situations in Pakistan & what are the difficulties, which a new entrepreneur has to face in Pakistan? How can it be improved?

MIB: The policies of the present government are business and investment friendly. Because of the continuity of our economic policies this year we have achieved an export target of US$: 17 Billion. However, industrialist especially the exporters are facing a problem of increasing cost of doing business which is making us uncompetitive in our regional market. The industry is over-regulated and need to be simplified. The work of a government should be as a facilitator.

KPDC: What do you think is more important to be a successful businessman, education or experience?

MIB: Education is of course the most important factor as it provides a foundation base for any profession. Experiences give you strength and combination of both these factors plays an important role for your success. If these two things are coupled properly then you can achieve your goals in any professional path.

KPDC: How do you see the future of E-Commerce in Pakistan since E-Commerce solutions are not being taken up as it should be by the Pakistani Businessmen? Why? And how can we promote it?

MIB: E-Commerce is growing rapidly in the developing countries. However, its pace in Pakistan is slow and not satisfactory. Comparing to other countries in our region such as India and China we are still behind. A positive aspect is that in Pakistan too, people are getting educated about this revolution now. They have started feeling its importance and so a great scope can be predicted too.

KPDC: In the West the most hyped issue is of law & order and security in Pakistan. Don’t you think these situations will show the negative image of investment and business opportunities for foreign investors?

MIB: International Media in the west always portray Pakistan in a very negative way. They show Pakistan as a backward country and also a small incident portray in a dramatize way. You will never see them portraying good things about our country. I must appreciate our Prime Minister’s and President’s efforts here. They have been working very hard in this regard to improve the image of Pakistan and seek foreign investment. I feel that the west and America will never invest in our country because of many reasons. However, we should target the Middle East countries because of the oil boom they have plenty of surplus funds to invest. This year a foreign investment of 3 billion dollars is invested by Saudi’s Group and UAE groups. We should also target people of Pakistan settle in abroad especially in USA and Europe to come and invest in our country.

KPDC: Our generation is still unaware of the opportunities offered by textile industry. Do you feel we need to guide our generation towards this area through career counseling etc.?

MIB: Textile is the back-bone of our country. The share of textile in our export is 60%. Its contribution in our GDP is 20% and it provides employment to 40% of our total workforce. There is a lot of scope in this field and people can adopt it as their profession. Unfortunately, textile industry is facing a big problem of finding the technical and skilled workforce. Every year our universities are producing graduates who can’t find the jobs easily but there is a shortage of skilled people in our country. My advice is we should produce more skilled and technical workforce who can easily absorb in the textile sector.

KPDC: I have heard you won an award for being the most well dressed individual by National council for arts and culture. Please share some tips for being an admirable personality.

MIB: Last year the National Council of Arts has selected me among the 20 people from the different walk of life. Our Prime Minister Shaukat Aziz was also among the well dressed personality of the year. A panel of judges consist of journalists, fashion designers etc. select

KPDC: What message would you convey for the youngsters and the Netizens around the world through our website?

MIB: Please own your country and work together for the sake of country. This is not the time to think about our personal benefits. Our country needs us and we should play our role to progress as a nation.
